Trace on the Native Land

Trace on the native land…… Meetings of the local core under this title have become traditional at the Oblast Pushkin Library. Local science specialists, teachers and historians gather every year. This meeting held on February, 15 was devoted to the 2007significant and unforgettable dates and people.
Well known naturalist Sherbakov, historians Durnovo, Kusch, Abai and Pushkin library employees discussed the region’s history, and people who were investigating native land, such as Gerasimov, Beloslyudov, Pankratyev… These people had a great influence on our region’s history.
Beloslyudov made an outstanding contribution to the development of local and museum science of the East Kazakhstan oblast.  Gerasimov was one of those who founded Semipalatinsk subdivision of the Russian Geographical society. He gathered materials about Dostoevsky, Michaelis and Potanin.  We have a right to consider Pankratyev as a local explorer too.  Because he was one of the initiators of the city parks laying-out: Dzhambul park and Kirov park, grapes garden on Ablaketka, and poplar and birch lanes on the main Ust-Kamenogorsk streets.
The meeting commemorated a wonderful trace these people left on the Irtysh land and made us closer to the East Kazakhstan history..
The event included special exhibitions. The unique documents, materials and photos from EKO state archive were displayed . The exhibition of Abai library rare books attracted public’s great attention.  There the original editions of Russian Geographic society were presented.

World AIDS Day

December 1st World AIDS Day there was public lecture in the Regional Pushkin Library called "Generation free from AIDS". Antonina Kushnareva, epidemiologist assistant of the regional Center on preventive measures and awareness of AIDS met students of schools and professional technical specialized schools.
World AIDS Day began in 1988 as a day to focus attention on the HIV/AIDS epidemic throughout the world--across countries, organizations, and governments. Each year there is a theme for World AIDS Day. This year the topic was "Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS". About half of the people living with HIV are female. Globally women and girls are becoming infected with HIV at a faster rate than men and boys. A new United Nations report says, "Despite this alarming trend, women know less than men about how HIV/AIDS is transmitted and how to prevent infection, and what little they do know is often rendered useless by the discrimination and violence they face."
Paying attention to girls and women, the aim of a campaign is to activate activity in faighting against epidemic, preventing new cases of infectioning, popularization of aqual access to cure programs and smoothing over after-effects of AIDS.
AIDS and the attitude of the society to the AIDS-infected people make the position very complicated. Lyaila Nogaybayeva, the specialist of the Legal information center covered the topics of rights and duties of this category of sick people, if there are any legislative restrictions, and many other topics. Her speech was followed by a discussion on moral ethical side of interrelation with AIDS infected. At the discussion the following topics were discussed: voluntariness of test on AIDS?, If the doctor should keep secrecy if the surrounded people are in danger? etc. After the lecture the participants watched the exhibition "Mind your future".

Ñonference for English Teachers

On the 6th of October, 2004 Mollie Hackle, the U.S. Embassy representative in Kazakhstan, gathered English teachers of Ust-Kamenogorsk for a conference. The topic of the conference was "How to make a movie a good resource in the classroom".
At first they found out what films students like the most, what attracts people to a movie etc. After that the teachers watched a movie "Tootsie" and learned how to discuss the film with the students and what materials to use for it. For example, giving the assignment to predict the next scene; predict words, make up a dialog using additional materials and so on. Mollie also explained a good way of checking listening comprehension and many other useful hints of how to use films in the classroom.

ACCELS Awards Ceremony

On February 23, 2004 an ACCELS awards ceremony was held at the library. Six local English teachers were recognized for their dedication and the outstanding work they have done in their profession. These six teachers will now compete with teachers from other regions of the country for a free trip to visit the United States. Also in attendance at the ceremony were school directors, a representative of the Department of Education and local Peace Corps volunteers.

Pay It Forward

That is the name of the international program, created by teachers from gymnasium #10 for student exchange. The school-partner is in Tucson, Arizona.
On February, the 1st, children from the city's schools came to meet the group of pupils who visited America. Galina Faustova, the English teacher and one of the project founders, came with the children. The first trip to the USA took place from Sept. 29 to Oct. 22, 2003. They went to our partner-school in Tucson, Arizona, Flowing Wells High School (FWHS).
They had many meetings in Tucson where they shared the information about our country and the project "Pay It Forward" with many different people including Tucson's Mayor and University of Arizona. Two days were dedicated to Kazakhstan presentations where the teachers together with their students not only talked a lot about Kazakhstan but also performed a cultural program with national dances and songs.
A great time was dedicated to the volunteering work they did in Tucson. They visited Life Care Centre two times, helped American students in their volunteering activities raising money for Fire Department, for homeless people and other needs.
They all feel great satisfaction after the trip and the best illustration of all our impressions is the article written by our students and published in "Tucson Citizen" newspaper in October 3, 2003 (http://www.tucsoncitizen.com).
The story was accompanied by showing the site's pages and some photographs. "Everybody's welcome to take part in the program!" - were Galina's last words.

From August 18 to 21, Eastern Kazakhstan Regional Library, in collaboration with the IATP access site in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, convened a four-day seminar on managing electronic resources for librarians in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. Library Director Khabiba Akzhigitova (CC 00), her colleague Aliya Sarsembinova (Muskie 00), and Professor Vadim Stepanov (JFDP 95; CI 98) from the Moscow State University of Culture and Arts developed the program for the seminar. As part of the seminar, IATP provided instruction in Internet basics and advanced Web search. The librarians had the opportunity to practice their skills by searching catalogs for rare books, and also got acquainted with the websites of electronic libraries such as the State Library of the Russian Federation at www.rsl.ru, the Central Library System at http://www.libnet.ru and the Library Network at www.sigla.ru. IATP Assists Rural Librarians in Pushkin Library

From July 7 to 11, IATP volunteer trainers Raushan Myazova and Alexandr Kaller conducted an advanced course on Internet searches for librarians from rural areas at the IATP access site in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan. The Eastern Kazakhstan Regional Department of Culture initiated a regional project to create a computer network for the rural libraries of Kazakhstan. Seeing a need to bring librarians from the regions up to speed, Raushan and Alexandr organized this training. The librarians, coming from the Ridder, Zyryanovsk, Glubokoye, Ulanskiy, and Shemonaikha regions, had already obtained basic computer skills in December 2002. They returned to review their skills and learn how to work with the Internet for electronic document delivery and using Web-based databases. Ultimately, through sharing this knowledge with their colleagues in other rural areas, not one library in Kazakhstan will be without computer and Internet literate librarians.

IATP Helps Reintroduce Kazakh to Kazakhstan

On June 11, Aliya Sarsembinova (Muskie 00), an active IATP user and volunteer, who is also head of the Regional Library’s Information Technology department in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, conducted a workshop on the workplace’s gradual conversion to the Kazakh language at the City Internal Affairs Department. In order to help the department’s employees adopt the Kazakh language into their workplace, Aliya referenced Internet resources where the department’s employees could turn for helping develop the ability to work in Kazakh. She mentioned www.sozdik.kz, an IATP-created Kazakh-Russian dictionary. She also described www.tilashar.kz, which covers the history of the Kazakh language and has online Kazakh lessons. She also cited www.qazaqtili.com, which covers everything from sports to history to government in Kazakhstan. By sharing these resources, Aliya hoped to provide some tools to help officials follow Kazakhstan law and work in Kazakh. In northern Kazakhstan especially, very few people speak Kazakh, despite Kazakhstan’s 10 years of independence from their northern neighbor. The Kazakhstan President declared that all government employees must use Kazakh in their work as the official language, but Russian remains the common language. Thanks to IATP support, Aliya has become a specialist on conducting such workshops, which she believes socially empower her people.

Children also got to know the developing sites (different puzzles and tongue twisters), had a chance to visit virtually the world of fairy-tales and to have adventures in the world of W. Disney ( (http://disney.go.com)

At the end of the training there was a questionnaire dedicated to the Internet sites for children and also a safe lottery.
